James P. (J.P.) Valin, MD President, Medical Groups & Provider Services
J.P. Valin joined SCL Health as President, Medical Groups & Provider Services, in September 2016. He chairs the Board of Managers for Provider Services and is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to employed physicians, Medical Group associates in each market and the system-level Provider Services staff and support services.
Dr. Valin manages the full scope of Medical Groups and Provider Services to achieve a thriving delivery structure, successful performance improvement standards, a highly attractive practice environment for providers, and improved clinical quality, population health and financial outcomes, while strengthening a sense of systemness throughout Medical Groups and our ministry.
Previously, Dr. Valin served in leadership roles at Banner Health in Greeley, Colorado, since 2006. Most recently he served the Western Division as the Regional Medical Officer, the Chief Medical Officer of Banner Medical Group, and the CMO Sponsor of Primary Care Clinic Consensus Group. His previous roles include Medical Director of Mountain Shadows Physician Hospital Organization, and Medical Director, Hospitalist Service, at Big Thompson Medical Group, Inc., in Loveland, Colorado.
He earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, and his bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He served as the Internal Medicine Intern and Resident at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Campus, and the Assistant Chief Medical Resident of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
