Benefiting Our Community

Over and above the provision of quality health care services, Hospitals and Clinics of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System are valued community partners.

Not only do we provide excellent patient care, said Sister Judith Jackson, S.C.L., vice president sponsorship, we also benefit the communities we serve with many special programs, outreach and financial support.  We do this to enhance and improve the health of our communities overall with special concern for persons who are underserved.

Positive outcomes anticipated from partnership with innovative school

Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., is a proud sponsor of the unique corporate work-study program of Cristo Rey Kansas City.  The new high school, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, opened its doors this fall.  The school's mission is to provide a Catholic, college preparatory education through a work-study program to culturally diverse students with economic need.

Providence provides wages for four students who share a professional, entry-level clerical job at the hospital.  The students attend classes at Cristo Rey four days a week; they each rotate one day per week through the job at Providence.  Students are working in the radiology department and the Diabetes Center. The wages the students earn go toward their education, allowing them to receive a private, college prep education at an affordable cost.

We believe that our support of Cristo Rey is strongly aligned with our Mission and Core Values to give back to our community and to support future leaders, said Carolyn Bowmer, Providence human resources director.
