Michael A. Dorsey, has been appointed the leadership position of president/chief executive officer (CEO) of Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., and Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan. In making this announcement, Lee Ludwig, M.D., chair of the Providence Medical Center-Saint John Hospital Board of Directors, said, “Mike brings extensive executive level experience to this role which he has filled on an interim basis. He has the depth of experience and skills required to lead our two hospitals in the highly competitive Kansas City market.”
In his past roles as a chief operating officer (COO), Dorsey has had an outstanding track record of quality improvement, growth of health care services, cultivation of physician-hospital partnerships and strong Board relationships. He will assume his new position effective immediately.
Dorsey served as interim president/CEO of these two hospitals of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System (SCLHS) since October 2006. He joined SCLHS in 2000 as vice president for network development at St. Francis Health Center, Topeka, Kan. In 2003, he became COO at St. Francis with responsibility for hospital operations, strategic planning, management of hospital-owned physician clinics and clinical service departments. Among his accomplishments, Dorsey created a hospital-wide culture that resulted in patient, physician and employee satisfaction measurements. Under his leadership, St. Francis also advanced its cardiology, oncology and orthopedics services lines.
Prior to joining SCLHS, Dorsey was COO of Deaconess Hospital, a 275-bed hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. He first served in Catholic health care at St. Joseph Medical Center, Wichita, Kan. Dorsey began his tenure at this 600-bed acute care, teaching hospital as a supervisor of the clinical laboratory and advanced to the position of administrative director for specialty services.
Dorsey earned his bachelor’s degree in medical technology and his master’s in business administration from Wichita State University, Wichita, Kan. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dorsey has served on a number of local and statewide councils and boards of directors.
