44% Of Coloradans Use ER For Non-Emergencies
A survey of 10,000 Coloradans has found that 44 percent of visits to the emergency room are for ailments that could be treated by a regular doctor. The highest portion of that percentage live in Mesa County, which is serviced by St. Mary's Hospital & Regional Medical Center in Grand Junction.

St. Vincent Healthcare Recognized

Faith-based nonprofit, St. Vincent Healthcare, helps Ugandans help themselves
A physician at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, Mont., Dr. Doug Parker, traveled to Afrida for a month to help people at medical clinics in Uganda. The work was part of a mission team from Hope 2 One Life.

Mullin Plaza Now Open At Saint John’s Health Center In Santa Monica
Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif. celebrated the completion of its new entrance, Mullin Plaza and Mullin Gardens, and its benefactors Peter and Merle Mullin with a garden party. To celebrate the support of the Mullins, the event included a parade of classic cars from the collections of Saint John’s trustees and friends.

St. Vincent Healthcare Remodel Creates Orthopedic and Spine Center of Excellence
The newly remodeled fifth floor of St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, Mont. is now the Orthopedic and Spine Center of Excellence. The $8.4 million project creates a space for family and caregivers in the same room as the patient that is a warm and healing environment during the recovery process.

New Cancer Center Opens at Good Samaritan Medical Center
The Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo., opened on Sept. 3. The new four-story, 87,600-sq-ft building, designed by Denver’s Davis Partnership Architects, complements the existing EGSMC campus and provides a state-of-the-art health care facility where patients and families can receive treatment in a caring environment.

Access to pediatric specialist at St. Vincent Healthcare a 'really big deal' for parents of hemophiliac child
Previously, Montana families with hemophiliac children might have had to seek treatment in places as far away as Denver. But St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings brought on a pediatric hematologist-oncologist about a year ago to provide closer options.

Marillac Clinic Officials Advise Residents to Prepare for Changes in Health Care

St. Francis Health Center, Stormont-Vail to share pediatric doctors
Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center and St. Francis Health Center announced plans to combine their neonatal and pediatric staffs to improve service to patients. The move does not eliminate any positions. The hospitals will share physicians but keep separate staff members in nursing and other positions.

Butte Teamsters Union & St. James Healthcare Reach Agreement
The Butte Teamsters Union #2 and St. James Healthcare agreed on a new two year working contract. Both sides met with a federal mediator until a tentative agreement was made. Teamster members then ratified the contract with an unanimous vote of approval.

National Jewish, Saint Joseph Hospital form partnership
National Jewish Health and Saint Joseph Hospital announced plans to create a partnership that paves the way for a joint operating agreement. SCL Health System, the parent company of Saint Joseph, and National Jewish expect to finalize the arrangement in the first quarter of 2014.

Flooding forces cancellation of 100-mile Good Samaritan Foundation ‘bike jam;’ organizers donate food to Jamestown evacuees
The seventh annual Good Sam Bike Jam, a 100-mile ride that would have taken cyclists through Lyons and Allenspark was cancelled when raging flood waters wiped out parts of the route. But organizers of this fundraiser hosted by the Good Samaritan Foundation quickly switched gears to make sure the effort that had gone into planning this benefit for the foundation’s Cancer Assistance Fund wasn’t in vain.

Providence to Acquire Saint John’s Health Center
Providence Health & Services, Southern California said it had reached a definitive agreement to take over Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. Pending regulatory and other approvals, Providence Southern California, a unit Providence Health & Services of Renton, Wash., will assume ownership and day-to-day management of the 234-bed hospital from SCL Health System, which is based in Denver.
