Robotic Surgery Now Offered at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital

September 02, 2008
Robotic surgery now offered at Exempla St. Joseph Hospital -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patients needing surgery are now offered another option at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital: the da Vinci S ™ Robot. The da Vinci S Surgical System is quickly becoming the next surgical standard of care for many doctors who perform prostate surgery, gynecologic surgery including hysterectomies, and future uses could include cardiac surgery. Some of the benefits of robotic surgery are: v Shorter hospital stay v Significantly less post-operative pain v Less blood loss v Quicker recovery v Fewer complications & less risk of infection v Less scarring: small, dime-sized incisions versus a 6-8 inch scar Here’s how it works: the da Vinci robot is positioned at the patient’s bedside – four robotic arms are inserted through three to four dime-sized incisions. The surgeon sits at a console next to the patient and directs the movements of the robotic arms. These movements are translated seamlessly inside the patient’s body, eliminating all tremor and allowing for the most precise movements as the surgeon operates, viewing the anatomy through a high-resolution, high definition, 3-D vision system. The surgeon has full control of the camera and is able to manipulate the instruments just as he would his hands. The tiny instruments have wrist-like movement and allow for meticulous sewing and dissection. All of these components minimize opportunities for human error when compared to other approaches. This is a significant improvement over traditional laparoscopic surgery. In a laparoscopic procedure, the doctor must look up and away from his instruments to a nearby 2-D video monitor to see the anatomy. The da Vinci provides better visuals, enhanced dexterity, greater precision and ergonomic comfort.
