Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children, and it's very important to make sure the car seats are installed correctly-it could save a child's life. The Baby's First Ride Program at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center is a unique, hospital-based prevention program that gives every family of a newborn the opportunity to have their car seat inspected by a Certified Passenger Safety Technician before they leave the hospital. The parents are educated about proper usage of the seat, and learn to install it correctly in their car. And...parents can access the program for follow-up as long as their child needs a car seat. One of the best parts of the program is that it's FREE! Every year, Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center spends about $15,000 annually on the program and this year, the Lafayette Fire Department is holding a Firemen's Boot Fundraising Drive to benefit the Baby's First Ride Program. All proceeds will go directly to the program to help purchase car seats for the families of newborns. On Saturday, May 23, Lafayette firefighters will be at the intersection of Highways 42 and 287, in front of Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, asking drivers for spare change for this important program.
