TOUR DE CURE MONTANA Challenges Cyclists to Make a Difference For People with Diabetes
July 23, 2009
The Montana Area office of the American Diabetes Association is challenging Montanans to dig deep within themselves and untap the determination, strength and courage it takes to participate in the 2009 Tour de Cure®, an annual cycling event to raise money for supporting services and research related to diabetes.
On September 19, avid and novice cyclists from around the state will gather at the Missouri Headwaters State Park near Three Forks and west of Bozeman to ride one of four routes in this first statewide Tour de Cure. to raise critical funds to support the work of the American Diabetes Association in Montana. These riders will join more than 33,000 other cyclists and volunteers at more than 80 Tour de Cure events throughout the nation this year in the fight against diabetes, which is growing at near-epidemic proportions.
The Tour de Cure raises funds through registration fees and pledges collected by the cyclists. To register, volunteer or learn more, call the American Diabetes Association toll-free at 1-888-DIABETES or visit www.diabetes.org/tour.
“Many people will participate in the Tour de Cure for the stimulating competition, camaraderie and physical cycling challenge. But the real reward comes in knowing that every mile they ride and every dollar they raise brings us that much closer to a cure for this disease that kills more people than breast cancer and HIV/AIDS combined,” said Trina Adams, American Diabetes Association’s Billings office.
‘The Tour de Cure Montana promises to be a beautiful and well-supported ride, touring some of the most beautiful open country in Montana,” observes Carla Cox, PhD, RD, CDE, event co-chair. “Cyclists will enjoy wonderful views, delicious food at rest stops, and great entertainment at the finish. Register now, form a team, and begin training for the ride!”
All four routes begin at the Missouri Headwaters State Park. Cyclists can select a 6 mile family fun ride in the park or scenic 23-, 56-, or 100-mile routes. Checkpoints include places like Manhattan, Churchhill, Blacks Ford, Norris, Harrison, and Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park.
This Tour de Cure is organized primarily by a volunteer committee scattered throughout the state. Local corporate sponsors who have already committed support include St. Vincent Healthcare, St. James Healthcare, Holy Rosary Healthcare, ConcoPhillips, Gap Communications, KOFI, Inc., and the Billings Gazette. In addition, Medtronic and St. Vincent Healthcare are sponsoring the Red Riders in the Three Forks ride.
National sponsors of the Tour de Cure include AT&T, Gold’s Gym, Johnson & Johnson, Valero, Dignity memorial, and Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club. These sponsors support teams and volunteers at many of the sites throughout the USA.
The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the Association is a community-based organization that provides services in every region of the country.
