Exempla selected in top 50 hospital systems by: Jeff Selberg President & CEO Article Contributed on: 10/13/2009 8:26:00 PM Exempla Healthcare has been selected by Thomson Reuters, the research firm that names the Top 100 Hospitals in America each year, as one of the Top 50 Hospital Systems in the country for clinical quality and efficiency. This award is a tribute to the people of Exempla Healthcare who have collaborated across the system to improve our clinical quality and efficiency on our Best in the Nation journey. For the first time this year, Thomson Reuters used its "balanced scorecard" methodology to examine the clinical quality of hospital systems, not just individual hospitals. Thomson Reuters called the study an attempt "to measure health systems as entities unto themselves and what they stand for in terms of the quality of care that they are providing to their various communities." The Thomson Reuters' "score card" uses five measures to gauge clinical quality and efficiency: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, and adherence to clinical standards of care. As the Thomson Reuters research affirms, Exempla clearly stands for clinical quality in this community. As a Top 50 Hospital System, Exempla was in the top 50 of the 252 hospital systems included in the study. Moreover, the study showed a wide difference in quality between hospital systems in the top fifth and those in the bottom fifth: • The mortality index for the top 50 is 25.4% lower than for the bottom 50 hospitals; • The complications index for the top 50 is 19% lower than the bottom 50 hospitals; • The patient - safety index is 12.7% lower than the bottom 50 hospitals; • The length-of-stay index was 15.8% better for the top 50 hospitals. And those percentage differences make a real difference to patients' lives. Thompson Reuters estimates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as the top 100 health systems, let alone the top 50: • More than 47,000 additional patients would survive each year • Nearly 92,000 patient complications would be avoided annually • The average patient stay would decreased by more than half a day People who have been our patients are alive today and have had a better clinical experience than if they had gone to a different hospital in a different system. And the credit for that belongs to everyone at Exempla Healthcare. I have to say again how proud I am of you. Thank you - congratulations for this award and achievement. The award belongs to you.
