Community Kids to Name New Robot! Educating Our Children about Advancing Healthcare Technology

March 23, 2010
Billings, Montana, 2010 - Today St. Vincent Healthcare announced its “Name Our Robot” Contest. In an effort to help educate our children about today’s medicine and advancing health technology, St. Vincent is kicking off a contest to name its new da Vinci surgical robot. Student winners can earn a cash reward for their classroom and a class tour of the St. Vincent Healthcare Operating Department (OR) with a special visit and hands-on experience with the newly named surgical robot!

The St. Vincent Healthcare da Vinci robot is an advanced technology that provides robotic-assisted surgery. Working under the direction of the surgeon, da Vinci performs complex procedures through small openings with 3-D imaging, increased magnification and more precise, finite movement which allows for better mobility and shorter recovery time of minimally invasive surgery.

The St. Vincent da Vinci is a philanthropic project of the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation. “This technology is multifaceted and will truly improve the care for our region’s patients. Because of the work of pediatric urologist, Dr. David Chavez, that includes our kids!” said David Irion, President and CEO of the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation. “One of the main reasons the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation has worked more than a year now to fund and bring the da Vinci robot to our community, is because it will serve so many facets of our surgery programs including children, men and women.”

In its quest to serve the children of Montana and Wyoming, St. Vincent Healthcare continues to offer progressive and innovative pediatric programs and services. St. Vincent Children’s Healthcare is the only facility in Montana to offer da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery for kids.

Because the advanced technology of da Vinci at St. Vincent will be helping serve the kids in this region, St. Vincent is asking area students (1st – 6th grade) to help name the new surgical robot! Along with a proposed name, students will also draw a picture of the da Vinci robot, and submit it, along with a few sentences explaining why they chose that particular name.
