"Find Your Verb" Program for High Risk Children
March 08, 2010
St. James Healthcare, the Butte Community Diabetes Network, and the Butte Family YMCA have partnered on a program to help area children who are at high risk for diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and joint problems.
The program, called “Find Your Verb,” is designed to provide a fun, non-threatening environment to introduce children to all forms of exercise available at the Butte Family YMCA. While the program is focused on children who are at high risk for developing health problems, it is open to all area children between the ages of 11 and 14.
“Exercise has a significant impact on eliminating or reducing the severity of many diseases and illnesses, but people are often intimidated by gyms and exercise programs,” said Ida Reighard, St. James Healthcare’s Diabetes Coordinator.
“This is a wonderful way to teach children about the benefits of regular exercise and get them comfortable with a gym setting,” she said.
Recently, 20 children graduated from the inaugural session. Holly McCamment, from the YMCA, said, “The program introduces children to the many different aspects of the Y, from the pool, weights, and cardio to yoga and pilates, but it works because the children are having fun while they learn!”
The next session begins on March 15, 2010, at the Butte Family YMCA. The 8-week program will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The cost is $40 for the eight-week session or $20 for children who have a YMCA membership. According to Reighard, scholarships are available for children who cannot pay the fee.
