Heart & Sole Run: Awarded - RRCA Western Regional 5K Championship!

June 11, 2010

Touching Lives… Around the World

Billings, Montana - The St. Vincent Healthcare Heart & Sole Run will now impact more lives than ever before. In its 31st year, the Heart & Sole Run has grown with its community partners reaching out to improve the lives of St. Vincent Healthcare heart and lung patients, our community’s kids and now… kids and adults across the country and all around the world. On Saturday, June 12, 2010, the start gun will sound at 8:30am in front of St. Vincent Healthcare at 12th Avenue North and North 30th Street. From there, each and every runner, walker or volunteer begins changing lives.

Heart & Sole Run: NEW RRCA Western Regional 5K Championship Designation:
This year, the Heart & Sole celebrates a new level of competition. The Heart & Sole has moved (up) from the only RRCA 5K Montana State Championship Race to now become the RRCA Western Regional 5K Championship destination. The Western Region includes: MT, WY, CO, NM, ID, UT, AZ, NV, CA, OR, WA, AK, and Guam. This is a tremendous opportunity for top flight competition for runners throughout the western United States. For four years, the Road Runners Club of America designated the Heart & Sole Run the Montana 5K State championship. But now, everyone who enters the 5K has the option to race in the prestigious Regional Championship. As usual the race promotes the participation of top flight road racers along with walking teams and families—it is truly the Billings regions’ race for everybody no matter what your skills.

Heart & Sole - Life Changing Connections:
New Relationship with Soles4Souls:
This year St. Vincent Healthcare is partnering with Soles4Souls. On Race Day, bring your new or slightly used shoes and they will be distributed to those in need. Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you. The charity distributes these shoes free of charge to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 7 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently donating one pair every 9 seconds) The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.

KOHL’S Cares for Kids on the MOVE:
Once again, Kohl’s and its employees have stepped forward to support our community’s kids in changing life habits to get healthy and get moving! Through St. Vincent Healthcare, this year Kohl’s Cares for Kids on the Move is supporting kids at Broadwater Elementary and Washington Elementary with ongoing efforts like the 30/30 program, which works to decrease television or screen time by 30 minutes per day and works to increase exercise time by 30 minutes per day. The program also focus’ on health education and decreasing soda intake to substitute with water. Students in this program will participate with their families in the 2010 Heart & Sole Run.

Proceeds from the Heart & Sole Run/Walk:
Serve two important community missions: to provide scholarships for patients with serious heart or lung problems who need supervised exercise programs at St. Vincent Healthcare and scholarships for youth to take part in the Billings YMCA – Strong Kids Youth Support Campaign - building healthier kids.
