Ida Reighard Named Diabetes Educator of the Year
December 30, 2010
Ida Reighard, RN, CDE, St. James Healthcare’s Diabetes Grant Coordinator has been named Montana’s Diabetes Educator of the Year by the Montana Chapter of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (MAADE). The award is given annually to a diabetes educator who has made a special contribution to the field through dedication, innovation and sensitivity in patient care.
“We are pleased that Ida’s significant contribution to Butte and Southwest Montana has been recognized by MAADE,” said Shannon Holland, Vice President of Patient Services at St. James Healthcare. “With amazing energy and enthusiasm, Ida has worked diligently over the past two years to bring diabetes awareness and education to the forefront in our communities. This award signifies the outstanding job she has done!”
In her role as diabetes grant coordinator, Reighard currently coordinates and teaches diabetes classes in Butte, Drummond and Phillipsburg. In 2011, those classes will be offered in other communities throughout Southwest Montana. She also leads monthly support groups for both adults and children with diabetes.
Reighard has been instrumental in the development of the Butte Community Diabetes Network, a partnership between St. James Healthcare, the Butte Family YMCA, the North American Indian Alliance, the Butte Community Health Center, Mountain Pacific Quality Health, and several local physicians. This network actively performs outreach to physicians and nurses, to the local schools, to the Butte Silver Bow Public Housing Authority and others to increase awareness of diabetes and the programs that are available to help people who have the disease or are at risk for it.
