Exempla Lutheran Answers the Call for Hospital Amenities
February 14, 2011
A recent New England Journal of Medicine article, "The Emerging Importance of Patient Amenities in Hospital Care," brought to light how important amenities have become when patients choose their care venue. Surveys suggest that patients deeply value these added features-it appears the days of the stark, unwelcoming institution are swiftly coming to an end.
In keeping with this trend, many expectant moms are searching for an environment in which to enjoy the birth experience. Exempla Lutheran Medical Center's Women and Family Center wants them to search no more. In an environment designed to bathe women in luxury, the center provides a "spa-like experience" that promises to feel like a stay at a five-star hotel.
Said Heather Emmerich, MS, RNC, Clinical Manager, Labor & Delivery and NICU: "We are the newest unit in the Denver area, so everything is sparkling and beautiful. Our guests especially love the relaxing whirlpool tubs in each birthing suite and relish knowing that soothing warmth is always only seconds away."
"The center also provides an outdoor patio," Emmerich continued. "Our guests can take advantage of the warm Colorado sunshine while enjoying serene views of the Front Range."
The Women and Family Center currently offers massage for a fee and is working on making manicures and pedicures available. Additionally, women have the opportunity to shop in a boutique especially catering to new and nursing mothers.
After baby is born, the Women and Family Center at Exempla Lutheran presents the family with a unique item: "All our families receive a card called 'Baby's First Cry'-and it is just that: a card that records each baby's first utterance. We're so happy to have captured a memory that our families will always treasure," said Marcia Teague, MS, RNC, Clinical Manager, Mom/Baby and GYN.
Former Women and Family Center expectant mom, Nikki DeJong, had this to say about her experience: "With all the amenities I enjoyed, such as the whirlpool tub, my Temper-Pedic mattress and the homey atmosphere, my experience should surely be rated in 5280 as 'the best in Denver!'"
Additional amenities include:
- Welcome parties for big brothers and big sisters
- Free WiFi and computers in family areas
- Complementary fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies
- Take-home lasagna dinner
- Sleepsak for baby monogrammed with "Baby's First Sleepover"
- Complementary follow-up lactation visit
On the clinical side, Exempla Lutheran's Women & Family Center offers 12 labor and delivery rooms, a new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, 40 mom/baby and gynecological exam rooms and a prenatal and parenting education program. The center works with over 90 obstetricians, nurse midwives, pediatricians, pediatric nurse practitioners and neonatologists.
