Blood donors give so others can live

March 10, 2011
Nearly every long-time blood donor has an interesting and inspiring story about how and why they started giving blood. The best part of more than 1,000 of those stories, from donors honored on March 2, is that they’re not over yet. One gallon, five gallons, even 31 gallons later, they are still saving lives by donating blood. St. Mary’s recognizes donors who have reached gallon donation milestones each year with a special celebration. “These donors demonstrate their respect for human life every time they give blood,” says Jill Breman, donor recruiter at St. Mary’s Regional Blood Center. The Regional Blood Center’s donors provide blood for accident victims and surgery and cancer patients at St. Mary’s and at most hospitals in western Colorado. “Although more than 90 percent of Americans will need a blood transfusion during their lifetime, and 60 percent of Americans are eligible to give blood, only five percent actually donate,” says Breman. “The donors we honor each year are doing their part. We hope you’ll be inspired by them and become a regular donor.” St. Mary’s Regional Blood Center Second Floor, Advanced Medicine Pavilion 750 Wellington Avenue, Grand Junction Donation hours: Monday–Friday: 7:00 am–5:30 pm Saturday: 8 am–noon Or go to the Regional Blood Center's web page to see where our bloodmobile will be.
