St. Vincent Healthcare Receives the Mother Xavier Ross Award

May 13, 2011

For Breast Cancer Screenings for Impoverished American Indian Women

1,487 women served, seven detected cancers and one bus. St. Vincent Healthcare has received the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System (SCLHS) Mother Xavier Ross Award for Breast Cancer Screenings for Impoverished American Indian Women.

The St. Vincent Healthcare Mobile Mammography Coach embodies the spirit of Mother Xavier Ross. The Coach, with its two woman support staff, travels to the Crow, Fort Belknap and the Northern Cheyenne Reservations to offer mammograms to American Indian women; this population, up until now, has either been going without mammograms or has been screened with outdated technology. During the first quarter of operation, the number of mammograms performed by the St. Vincent Mobile Mammography Coach exceeded the Indian Health Services' projections for annual numbers of women served.

Mother Xavier Ross, SCLHS founder, and the Sisters who accompanied her into Leavenworth, Kansas in 1858, immediately began fulfilling the needs of those around them by caring for the sick and teaching children regardless of their gender, race or socioeconomic standing. Recognizing an unmet need out West, the Sisters expanded their missionary work to Montana, opening the St. Vincent Hospital in 1899. For over 110 years, St. Vincent Healthcare has ministered under the guise of Mother Xavier Ross's legacy to improve the health of individuals and communities served - especially our patients in underserved areas.

"The mission of St. Vincent Healthcare and the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth is fulfilled each day the Mobile Mammography Coach departs for a rural community to provide screenings to underserved and un-served women," said Jason Barker, President and CEO St. Vincent Healthcare. "St. Vincent Healthcare is honored to be accepting the prestigious Mother Xavier Ross Award."

St. Vincent Healthcare received a check for $50,000 and will apply this funding toward the continued philanthropic mission of the Mobile Mammography Coach.

The equipment in the St. Vincent Mammography Coach is comparable and as technically advanced as the St. Vincent Healthcare Yellowstone Breast Cancer, which is the region's only Breast Center of Excellence. The Mobile Mammography Coach uses the same high quality Hologic digital mammography imaging equipment and images are read by the same board certified radiologists from Eastern Radiological Associates as the Yellowstone Breast Center. The Mobile Mammography Coach is a philanthropic endeavor of the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation.
