St. Mary’s teaches kids safety at home, school and play

August 11, 2011

As the highest level trauma center between Denver and Salt Lake City, St. Mary’s treats those seriously injured in vehicle or workplace accidents, skiing or hunting mishaps, falls, and other similar events. “Part of being a trauma center is helping people learn to prevent injuries from happening in the first place,” says Sarah Gahagan, trauma program manager at St. Mary’s.

“Children are our most vulnerable citizens,” Gahagan says. “Teaching them how to stay safe at school, home and at play goes a long way toward establishing good lifelong habits.” Thanks in part to the support of Kohl’s Department Stores’ child safety and education program called Kohl’s Cares®, St. Mary’s takes its safety and injury prevention message out to children at schools, fairs, and special events.

For many years the star of St. Mary’s injury prevention program was Sara-the-Safety-Saurus, a dinosaur-shaped, van-sized mobile classroom. Sara has retired to the Museum of Western Colorado’s Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita. The safety message is now being delivered to the children of western Colorado by her daughter, Sadie, an interactive, education robot that makes learning fun.
