In-room TV channel teaches parents newborn care

October 31, 2011

Babies don’t come with instructions, but a special feature on St. Mary’s in-room television service is making up for that. New parents and other family members can learn the latest about immunizations, feeding, bathing, car seat safety, infant first aid, CPR, and selecting daycare just by watching TV. “Every topic related to caring for a baby and helping mom take care of herself after baby arrives is covered on the Newborn Channel available in patient rooms,” explains Carla Gallaway, RN, director of Nursing Practice and Education.

St. Mary’s nurses and educators teach new parents about taking care of baby, but the Newborn Channel can reinforce what they learn and cover additional topics. “It’s available 24-7, so they can watch it when they’re ready,” Gallaway says. “A program guide lists topics and times of specific programming so mom can find the show and time she wants to watch.”

Parents can also view Newborn Channel on their home computer using a password from the in-hospital program guide. Newborn Channel programming is available in English and Spanish.
