June 5-7 St. Mary’s sets sail for Cancer Survivors Day
May 24, 2012
Cruise ships are known for refreshment, recreation, and plenty of pampering. On June 5 St. Mary’s Regional Cancer Center launches the S.M.H. Survivor Ship for a celebration of cancer survivors and their supporters.
Annual National Cancer Survivors Day®, celebrated on the first Sunday of June, honors survivors, families, friends, and health care providers. St. Mary’s is expanding the celebration with three days of information, activity, and fun, June 5 through 7. “Our lobby will become a cruise-ship deck with daily events planned to buoy up our guests,” says Debra Hesse, cancer survivorship program coordinator.
Resources for survivors and their supporters will be on deck and refreshments served every day. A daily highlight will be a noon presentation by one of St. Mary’s oncologists. “Our physicians have been taking care of people with cancer for many years, and they know survivorship involves more than medical treatment,” Hesse says. “Three of our doctors will be sharing their experiences, observations, and knowledge on the roles food, laughter, and relaxation play in cancer survivors’ quality of life.”
