Ease back pain with a little knowledge

Back pain is a very common complaint. About 85 percent of Americans will suffer from back pain at least once in their lifetime. Fortunately, most back pain is not caused by a serious disease or injury and most can be relieved by fairly conservative treatment. But it’s not something to be ignored either, says Jack Magno, PT, of St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Services.
“Of course, everyone’s situation is different, and if you have troublesome back pain, the best first step is to see your family doctor,” Magno says. It’s also helpful to learn how the spine works and what you may be doing everyday that could be causing your current pain and contributing to more serious, future problems. Contributing factors may be as simple as bad lifting habits, slouching posture, improper choice of exercise, or not exercising at all, he adds.
“Discovering the cause and taking corrective action to relieve current pain is excellent preventive care. Changing a bad habit or doing exercises to strengthen the muscles that support your back are conservative treatment options that may help you avoid the need for more invasive treatment in the future,” Magno says.
