Denver hospitals among best in the nation for excellence and safety

DENVER — (April 12, 2013) – Exempla Healthcare, an affiliate of SCL Health System, announced today Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center and Exempla Lutheran Medical Center are recipients of the 2013 Healthgrades® Outstanding Patient Experience Award™.
The award places each in a select group of hospitals identified as providing outstanding performance in the delivery of a positive experience for patients during their hospital stay, as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, evaluate, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals.
In addition, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital achieved the 2013 Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™, placing the hospital within the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for its excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays.
To be eligible for the Healthgrades 2013 Outstanding Patient Experience Award, Exempla Good Samaritan and Exempla Lutheran must have met the clinical quality threshold for this award and have data for a minimum number of HCAHPS surveys:
• Clinical Quality Threshold – Both locations ranked among the top 80% of hospitals for clinical quality as ranked by average z-score across the conditions and procedures that Healthgrades evaluates using Medicare data.
• Minimum Number of HCAHPS Surveys – Exempla Good Samaritan and Exempla Lutheran had data for at least 100 Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys to reliably assess performance.
In order to receive the Patient Safety Excellence Award, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital must have shown better than expected performance in providing safety for patients in the Medicare population
during the 2013 study period (2009-2011), as measured by objective outcomes (risk-adjusted patient safety indicator rates) across 13 of the 14 most common patient safety indicators, as defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
