Group encourages, informs, and advocates

What’s a support group? It’s people who give you support and encouragement. People who help you solve problems and meet challenges. They share their discoveries gained from experience. They sound like family and friends, don’t they?

That’s exactly what the members of the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group do, according to Mary Ellen Ireland, chaplain and support group leader at St. Mary’s. “They help each other with the activities that make up daily life based on their experiences as people who use wheelchairs—things like enjoying a picnic in your favorite park or finding  a dentist.”

The support group, which has been meeting monthly for five years, always welcomes new members. You don’t have to be a former St. Mary’s patient to attend, Ireland explains. “This is a group of very positive and motivated people with a spirit of activism. They don’t just share what they know, they actively seek out and assemble information, like the guide to accessible hiking trails they’re working on.” And when the city of Grand Junction was redesigning the downtown area, the group provided input on how to make it work for people using wheelchairs. “In a very recent success, the group spearheaded an effort to get wheelchair-accessible picnic tables installed in Lincoln Park,” Ireland says. “I learn something from them every month!”
