DENVER — (July 15, 2013) – SCL Health System (SCLHS) has signed an agreement to participate in the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO) health information exchange (HIE). SCLHS’s three Denver care sites will be participating: Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital and Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center. CORHIO will be implemented across these care sites between December 2013 and March 2014.

The CORHIO HIE is a highly protected electronic network that links the medical records systems of doctors and other health care providers throughout Colorado. When needed for patient care, the HIE allows providers to exchange patient information, including hospital discharge notifications, lab tests and pathology results, X-ray, MRI and other imaging reports, physician transcription reports, newborn screening results and referral information.

By connecting its Epic electronic medical record (EMR) with CORHIO’s HIE, the three SCLHS Denver care sites are ensuring that t heir patients will receive the most safe and efficient care from their primary care doctors, and any other community-based healthcare providers they choose to visit who are part of the CORHIO network.

"Health Information Technology and our electronic medical record are key to the support of healthcare delivery today," says Dave Pecoraro, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, SCLHS. "The more we are able to share timely and critical medical information with our clinicians, the better the quality of care our patients will receive. All of the care sites that are part of SCLHS are now connected through the Epic EMR. Partnering with CORHIO allows our Denver care sites to share and access the EMR of patients with other Colorado facilities and clinicians who are participants with CORHIO. Not only does partnering with CORHIO benefit our patients, it also benefits the providers and members of our medical staff by allowing them to coordinate appropriate and accurate information from which they develop care plans for their patients in hospitals and clinics."

CORHIO has a broad network of participating providers from across the state of Colorado that includes more than 40 hospitals, 1,500 office-based providers, large laboratories such as LabCorp and Quest Diagnostics, over 100 long-term and acute care facilities, and more.
