Lafayette, CO (November 3, 2013) – Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center (EGSMC) has received Trauma Level II designation from the Colorado State Emergency Medical and Trauma Advisory Council (SEMTAC). The hospital was surveyed from Level II Trauma requirements by the American college of Surgeons (ACS) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). This designation makes EGSMC Boulder County’s newest Trauma Level II hospital.

Surveyors were particularly complimentary of the program that has been developed to serve the community.

  • The Emergency Department has devised an active injury prevention program which includes classes for different age groups that help prevent injuries.
  • The Emergency Department participates with the Regional Emergency Medical & Trauma Advisory Council (RETAC), in evidence-based practice improvements, such as preventing juries to patients who were previously on backboards for extended periods of time.

The hospital was also complimented by the surveyors on the relationships it has developed with pre-hospital providers (EMS) and the education programs it provides for them. For example, the hospital hosts a half-day workshop for EMS providers twice per year for clinical credits which focuses on various topics in emergency medicine.

“This higher trauma designation level represents an important milestone for Good Samaritan and demonstrates our commitment to the community,” says Dr. Barry Platnick, Trauma Medical Director. “It has always been our goal to provide comprehensive emergency and trauma care to our patients. We have received overwhelming support from our many EMS colleagues and their agencies because we are able to provide a higher level of trauma care with more resources for the care of the communities we serve.”

In addition to Trauma services, the EGSMC Emergency Department also offers the following services:

  • Telemedicine
  • Certified Stroke Center
  • Chest Pain Center Accreditation
  • Senior Emergency Program

“We are excited to offer extended trauma services to our community,” says Judy Gorham, Director of EGSMC’s Emergency Department. “We have been a beacon of health to many in our community and now with this added service, we will be able to treat more acute cases.”

As a designated trauma center we are caring for the injured patient through the entire spectrum from prehospital to discharge, transfer and rehabilitation if needed. Care is initiated through communication with prehospital personnel or the presentation of the patient at our door.

Level II Trauma Centers provide definitive care for complex and severe trauma patients. Emergency physicians and nurses are in-house and immediately available to the trauma patient to direct patient care and initiate resuscitation and stabilization. A surgeon is available upon patient arrival in the Emergency Department. A broad range of specialists, comprehensive diagnostic capabilities, and support equipment are available.

Specific Level II Trauma Center Requirements:

  • Two on/call trauma surgeons 24 hours/7 days per week (24/7).
  • Board Certified ED physicians 24 hours/7 days per week.
  • Neurosurgeon on/call 24/7 and if they take call at another facility must have a primary & back up call schedule.
  • Orthopedic surgeon on/call 24/7 with a 2nd call schedule or contingency plan.
  • Plastic, hand and spine surgery available to the trauma patient, with spine available 24/7.
  • Anesthesia available 24/7 and promptly available.
