On January 1, 1998, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System joined the Lutheran Medical Center of Wheat Ridge, Colorado to form Exempla Health Care. Exempla Health Care is a not-for-profit corporation operating Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, Exempla Colorado Lutheran Home, the brand new Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital (opened December 2004), and the Exempla Physician’s Network, a physician group with more than 80 physicians practicing throughout metropolitan Denver. As a part of Exempla Health Care, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital retains its commitment to its Catholic heritage and values.
Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, which celebrated its 132nd anniversary in 2005, is the oldest private teaching hospital in Colorado. The hospital offers accredited graduate medical education programs in family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, and surgery to approximately 100 graduate physicians each year.
Serving metropolitan Denver and the Rocky Mountain region, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital is the busiest hospital in Denver and delivers a high volume of specialty and tertiary services. It is the primary hospital provider for Kaiser Permanente's 340,000 Denver-area members. The Kaiser membership makes up approximately 65% of the hospital's patient volume.
Saint Joseph Hospital has received statewide and national recognition for giving high quality, cost-effective care. The hospital has been recognized as one of the 100 Top U.S. Hospitals three of the last five years in an annual study by HCIA, Inc., and Mercer Management Consulting, Inc. In addition, according to information released by the Colorado Hospital Association, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital charges are among the lowest in Denver.
