The first Sisters of Charity arrived in Leavenworth on Nov. 11, 1858. The Sisters soon realized a need to serve the sick so plans were drawn up for a new hospital. Even though it was still under construction, Saint John Hospital, the first private hospital in the state of Kansas, received a family of starving Civil War refugees as its first patients on March 15, 1864.

Today, Saint John Hospital, in affiliation with Providence Medical Center, offers a wide range of patient care services. These services were enhanced with the opening of the new Ambulatory Care Center located at the Saint John Medical Plaza near the main entrance to the hospital campus. The center includes a surgicenter and medical offices for primary care physicians and specialists.

In addition to general inpatient medical-surgical services, the hospital has an Intensive Care Unit. The Women's Center specializes in obstetrical and gynecological care and a variety of educational classes for moms-to-be and families. Along with the birthing facilities, a special area is designed to provide medical care and pre- and post-operative support following surgery.

The Emergency Services Department at Saint John provides 24-hour care by highly skilled physicians and nurses trained in advanced lifesaving techniques. This team of healthcare professionals is dedicated to providing personal, compassionate care to patients. The Saint John nursing and medical staff have supported efforts of the Leavenworth Alliance Against Family Violence’s Alliance Sexual Assault Center. The Center provides victims of sexual assault confidential medical treatment and access to safe shelter and counseling.

Saint John is often rated with high patient satisfaction from former patients.

Saint John’s Senior Behavioral Health Center focuses on treating behavioral and mental health changes in patients age 55 and older.  Older adults experiencing symptoms such as insomnia, poor appetite, forgetfulness, confusion or depression can seek treatment from a team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists and dietitians.

Saint John also offers rehabilitation services to assist patients in returning to their maximum potential. These include physical and occupational therapy as well as speech-language pathology and audiology services. Confident Living, a program to help patients with pelvic incontinence, and Infant Massage classes are also available.

The long tradition of deep love and Christian concern for the needs of all is still very much alive as Saint John Hospital continues building on a distinguished past... for a dynamic future.
