In 1907, inspired by the concept of Christian love and service, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth announced plans to build a hospital in Topeka. The Sisters went door-to-door soliciting money for the facility, and a community fund drive raised $9,500 to purchase land for the hospital. On October 17, 1909, St. Francis opened on West 6th Street.
The spirit of cooperation between the hospital and the community that characterized St. Francis' beginnings has continued throughout the decades. Today, Topeka and St. Francis remain partners in bringing the highest quality care and health education to Kansans.
The health center's dedication to service excellence is mirrored in its family-centered patient care programs. The cancer program has received a four-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons General on Cancer. At St. Francis, cancer care takes place in an oncology unit specially designed for patient and family comfort and convenience.
Surgical programs include outpatient surgery using laser and fiber optic technology, as well as angioplasty, artherectomy and electrophysiology studies performed in two state-of-the-art catheterization laboratories. Open heart surgery and cardiac rehabilitation are part of the continuum of cardiac services.
Expectant parents throughout the region choose the St. Francis NewLife Center, which features a home-like atmosphere, a full spectrum of educational classes and a loving staff.
The Rehabilitation Services staff and patients work together to overcome the effects of stroke, head and spinal cord injuries, amputations, neuromuscular diseases and coma. The St. Francis Joint Replacement Center employees help persons regain their mobility after knee and hip replacement procedures in an upbeat, baseball-themed unit. The St. Francis Emergency Department and Urgent Care Center provide 24-hour service.
