St. James Healthcare was established by five Sisters of Charity in 1881 to care for individuals who worked the mines. Motivated by its Mission to provide compassionate care and service, St. James has served as a regional medical center to the seven counties of Southwest Montana, including the primary service area of Butte-Silver Bow County, for the past 126 years. St. James is the largest hospital in Southwest Montana, licensed for 100 beds and staffs for an average daily census of 60. With 600 full-time employees, St. James continues to be the largest private employer in Butte-Silver Bow.
In May 2004, the hospital completed Project Excellence transforming St. James into a modern, state-of-the-art health care facility. In January 2007, St. James, along with Montana Orthopedics, Rocky Mountain Clinic, Intermountain Imaging, Summit Surgery Center and Surgical Solutions of Southwest Montana, celebrated the opening of the Regional Medical Arts Pavilion (RMAP). The 66,000 square foot medical office building is connected to the south side of the Hospital via a connecting link for patient and physician convenience. RMAP houses numerous physician offices and services in one convenient location.
In February 2008, St. James completed a remodeling project that converted all patient rooms into private suites. With this arrangement, St. James’ goal is to create a quiet, healing environment for our patients.
St. James houses a regional cancer care center, two palliative care rooms, a special procedures/cardiac catheterization laboratory, state-of-the-art surgical suites with laminar air flow units, orthopedic and neuroscience centers of excellence, a beautiful labor and delivery floor and a 24-hour, physician-staffed emergency department.
The St. James’ team is committed to continuing the healing Mission of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth by providing compassionate, quality health care to the people of Butte and Southwestern Montana.
